Science is a collaborative enterprise and justification for belief comes with sufficient consensus among those who research a particular topic, and that consensus largely comes with repeatable experimental evidence. I've thought of saying something like "What one man says, even if he's a scientist, is close to useless. I fear he knows just enough about science to listen to McMurtry's mumbo jumbo and think it makes sense and not spot the flaws. My mom is a nurse practitioner with a master's degree and my dad, while not college educated, has been interested in science his whole life. I know it's a long shot but I have a little hope because my parents at least aren't completely scientifically illiterate. I'm trying to think of some way I can make it clear to my family that this guy isn't credible. I don't have the time nor the willpower to do this. I know probably the best thing I could do is go to every presentation, take detailed notes of every claim he makes, and go through one by one finding reputable evidence that confirms or discredits each claim. I've sat through his presentations before and I honestly cannot stand listening to this man, and I would have a very hard time not banging my head against a wall. My family is heavily pressuring me to go, partially because I've had an interest in science my whole life, I went to engineering school, and I'm sure due to my lack of church attendance my family is concerned about my salvation.
